Refurbishment of the forecourt is now almost complete, with the resurfacing done, the pavilion back up, now with see-through walls, and tables and chairs in place. We just await the heating and lighting but we’re open for coffee, tempting goodies and the like – and you don’t have to wear a mask because you’re still out in the bracing fresh air – but sadly you do inside the Shop. This Saturday we will have the first of our weekly Christmas Hamper Raffles. Tickets are on sale in the Shop and the draw will take place at 11.00 on Saturday IN THE PAVILION. Come and have a flutter.Once the lighting and heating work is done we will revert to asking Post Office to wait in the pavilion until the Post Office counter is free. This is to prevent over-crowding in the Shop and has taken on new importance with the prevalence of Covid infections in our Post Code and especially the new Oh My Cron strain. We know it’s a pain but would be grateful for your cooperation – for your safety as well as that of others. The issue of the moment in the Post Office is customs declaration forms, which now have new rules. The value and weight of each item contained in a parcel must be shown on the declaration form. The total weight of the package will no longer suffice. If in doubt, seek advice from the Post Office or visit www.royalmail.com before sealing up your parcel. If you try to fudge it and get it wrong, you may find that some apparatchik somewhere will open the parcel and send it back to you at your expense, or just ditch it – what a pain! Best to get it right to begin with.
We are about to improve the forecourt to provide a more comfortable place for customers to wait for the Post Office or to have coffee etc in all seasons.
Work will begin on Friday 5 November, when the pavilion will be taken down and removed for servicing and cleaning.
Starting on Monday 8 November, the forecourt will be levelled and re-surfaced in a resin material, removing the current trip hazards. This work is expected to take about three days.
Once the re-surfacing is complete, the pavilion will be returned, fitted with lighting, heaters, gutters and clear plastic screens on the two outer surfaces. The screens will have sliding doors.
The wooden corner seat will be retained but the round picnic table will be removed and replaced by three small round tables and chairs. There will be two outside tables in the space at the front between the pavilion and the pavement.
Plants and bird food will be displayed on new shelves below the main shop window.
Newspapers will be presented in a new mobile display tower.
While the re-surfacing work is taking place, customers will not be able to access the forecourt, so during that time Post Office customers will be able to queue inside and we will be serving hot drinks to take away only. We apologise for any upheaval but it will be worthwhile.
This time next week, on Monday June 21st, Graham will be walking the 27 miles from Motcombe Community Shop to Salisbury Hospital, in aid of their Stars Appeal.
A map of his route, together with expected times he will be walking past some popular pubs is attached and is on display at the shop.
He will leave the shop at 6.00am and anticipates being at the hospital at about 4.40pm.
To date, the amount raised has been fantastic, but all support, both vocally, on the day, and financially will be gratefully received.
The last hamper in aid of this appeal will be raffled off on Saturday 29th June.
A reminder that the third of the Shop’s hamper raffles for the Salisbury Hospital Stars Appeal will take place on Saturday 12 June. One of Kay’s celebrated hampers of local produce sold by the Shop will be raffled off at 1130. Tickets are available, £1 each, in the Shop until 11.00 on Saturday. All the contents of the hamper and takings for hot drinks on Saturday morning are donated by the Shop to the Stars Appeal. Well done Motcombe; we have already raised over £3,000! The fourth and last raffle will be on Saturday 19 June. Keep digging and we can get to £4,000 if we really try. Remember: it might be worth your while
